CFIA: Health Hazard Alert-PETALES&CIE Arugula and Blue Cheese Pesto May Contain Dangerous Bacteria

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 25, 2007) - Audio clips available at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/direct/media/.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Petales et Cie are warning the public not to consume PETALES&CIE Arugula and blue cheese Pesto because this product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Toxins produced by this bacteria may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

The affected product, PETALES&CIE Arugula and blue cheese Pesto is sold in 200 ml glass jars. All lot codes and expiry dates of the product are affected by this alert. This product has been distributed in Quebec and Ontario.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with the toxin may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The manufacturer, Petales et Cie, St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
