CFIA/Health Hazard Alert: Solar Raw Food Brand Ultimate Kale Chips - Red Peppercorn Ranch May Contain Salmonella Bacteria

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Solar Raw Food are warning the public not to consume Solar Raw Food brand Ultimate Kale Chips – Red Peppercorn Ranch described below because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella. This product contains a seasoning made with black pepper which has been recalled by Mincing Overseas Spice Company of Dayton, New Jersey, USA because of possible contamination with Salmonella.

The affected product, Solar Raw Food brand Ultimate Kale Chips – Red Peppercorn Ranch, is sold in a 100 g package bearing UPC 8 75405 00503 1 and Best Before dates from 12FE11 to 15MR11 (February 12, 2011 to March 15, 2011). Pictures are available at the following address:

This product has been distributed in Ontario and Quebec.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a food borne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

Solar Raw Food, Castleton, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
