CIC Honours WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy With Globalist of the Year Award

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 26, 2009) - Pascal Lamy, director-general of the World Trade Organization, will be honoured with the Globalist of the Year Award at the Canadian International Council's (CIC) Annual Gala Dinner on November 3 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto.

Mr. Lamy will host a briefing with the press on November 3, at 5:30 pm in Truffles, Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, 21 Avenue Road.

The award is presented annually to an individual whose work and personal initiatives contribute to better international relations and cooperation, while enhancing the quality and tenor of international understanding.

Mr. Lamy is Director-General of the World Trade Organization since September 2005. He was elected for the post by the members of the WTO in 2005 for a 4-year mandate, and was re-elected in 2009 for a second mandate that runs until 2013.

Mr. Lamy began his career in the French civil service at the Inspection Générale des Finances and at the Treasury. He then became an advisor to the Finance Minister Jacques Delors, and subsequently to Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy. In Brussels from 1985 to 1994, Mr. Lamy was chief of staff for the President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, and his representative as Sherpa in the G7. In November 1994, he joined the team in charge of rescuing Credit Lyonnais, and later became CEO of the bank until its privatization in 1999. Between 1999 and 2004, Mr. Lamy was Commissioner for Trade at the European Commission under Romano Prodi. After his tenure in Brussels, Pascal Lamy spent a short sabbatical period as president of Notre Europe, a think tank working on European integration and as associate professor at the l'Institut d'études politiques in Paris.

The CIC Gala Dinner starts at 6:30 pm with a reception, followed by dinner with Michael Kergin, former Ambassador of Canada to the United States and senior advisor, Bennett Jones, as master of ceremonies. CIC Chair Jim Balsillie will present the award to Mr. Lamy who will give a keynote address.

The hosts of the dinner are Jim Balsillie and Peter Munk. Mr. Balsillie is co-CEO of Research In Motion and the founding chair of CIC, The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the Balsillie Centre of Excellence. Mr. Munk is founder and chair of Barrick Gold Corporation.
