CIDA: Minister Carroll Outlines Commitments to Aid
Tsunami Victims

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 11, 2005) - The Honourable Aileen
Carroll, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced further
details regarding the Canadian contribution to the United Nations Flash
Appeal for humanitarian assistance and relief efforts in the
tsunami-affected countries.

Of the $425 million announced yesterday by Prime Minister Paul Martin,
$36 million are being provided by the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA) to nine United Nations agencies.

"During my visit to Banda Aceh, one of the areas most badly hit by the
tsunami and earthquake, I saw the urgent and long-term needs of the
survivors," said Minister Carroll. "In response to this unprecedented
disaster, Canadians and the Government of Canada have responded quickly
and generously. We must ensure that our aid is used as efficiently as
possible and gets to the people who need it most. Coordination is key -
a point I emphasized today in Geneva."

The funds are distributed as follows:

- UNICEF - up to $13.5 million, based on the current projections of
matching donations to UNICEF Canada.

- World Food Programme and the UN Joint Logistics Centre - $10.5 million

- United Nations Development Programme - $3.5 million

- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees - $3 million

- World Health Organization - $1.5 million

- Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs - $1 million

- Food and Agriculture Organization - $1 million

- International Organization for Migration - $1.5 million (Indonesia)

- United Nations Security Coordinator - $500,000

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal
budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
