Communities across the province will celebrate the important work of the people who care for and support individuals with developmental disabilities at the first annual Developmental Services: Worker Appreciation Day.

When: Wed. Jan. 17, 2007

Where: Communities across Ontario (List below)

"We want to take the time to celebrate the incredible work done by the people across Ontario who care for individuals with developmental disabilities," said Sue Walker, chair of OPSEU's Developmental Services Sector. "These workers have dedicated their lives to helping people with developmental disabilities live as independently as possible. The difference staff make in their lives is incalculable."

Community residents who have family members in the developmental services system, are expected to play a key role in the day of appreciation.

Staff in developmental services are finding themselves under increasing pressure due to funding shortfalls. Despite this, the workers are devoted to their clients and the families.

"It's important to take the time out to recognize the contributions that our members make, not only to the people they support but also to their families and our community," said Leah Casselman, President of OPSEU. "We hope everyone will come out and join us in thanking the developmental service workers in our own communities."
