CUPE BC: Vancouver Art Gallery Workers Seek Mediation

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 2, 2009) - Members of CUPE 15, Vancouver Art Gallery workers, are seeking mediation to settle a contract dispute with their employer.

CUPE 15 president Paul Faoro says, "Despite a strong strike support vote, the employer is not willing to budge or accommodate these workers in any way."

"Art Gallery workers provide the expertise to mount shows like the current Dutch Masters exhibit," adds Faoro. "Yet the Association continually refuses to recognize their value."

Workers at the Vancouver Art Gallery took a strike vote on May 28 and gave their bargaining committee a 96% strike mandate. At issue are wages, benefits and reclassification.

CUPE 15 has applied to the Labour Relations Board for mediation and has enacted Section 5-1 of their contract which requires written strike notice be given.

CUPE 15 represents 120 workers at the Vancouver Art Gallery. They have been negotiating since March 17.
