CUPE, City of New Westminster to Unveil "City Watch"

Royal City the Latest B.C. Community to Adopt Program Aimed at Reducing Urban Crime

NEW WESTMINSTER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 21, 2010) - A new joint program combining the efforts of municipal workers, local police, fire and rescue services, and the City of New Westminster in tackling crime will be unveiled tomorrow (Tuesday, June 22) with a press conference at City Hall starting at 10:00 a.m.

New Westminster is the latest municipality to launch "City Watch", a successful initiative of CUPE BC in which municipal workers co-operate with local police and civic authorities to improve community safety. Under the program, municipal workers serve as 'extra eyes and ears' for the community.

Tuesday morning's launch, hosted by the City of New Westminster, will include remarks by New Westminster Mayor Wayne Wright, Police representative Lorne Zapotichny, and CUPE BC general vice-president Cindy McQueen.
