CUPE Local 82 Signs Job Creation Program Agreement With New Beginnings

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 23, 2010) - Jim Wood, President of Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 82, representing City of Windsor outside municipal workers, today signed an agreement with New Beginnings to ensure the agency's annual Summer Jobs for Youth program operates for dozens of local youth this summer.

"We've been proud to be involved with this program since 2008. This agreement will ensure young people aged 15 to 18 are able to find critical work experience through the city," said Wood.

Some young workers have already begun work through the Job Creation Program, jointly funded by the City and the Government of Canada. As well, the summer student lottery for Parks and Public Works will begin, as it always does, in May.

Other summer students are expected to begin work within the next two weeks within the departments of Public Works and Parks and Recreation in various parts of the city.

"I have spoken with City Administration, who have assured me that suggestions our local union was not prepared to support these worthwhile programs this summer was a mistake on their parts, and I'm prepared to accept that explanation," said Wood.
