CUPE Media Advisory: "Save the Roberts/Smart Centre-Fund Youth Mental Health!"

CUPE youth mental health workers to info-picket McGuinty's office May 27

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 26, 2009) - Workers at the Roberts/Smart Centre will info-picket Premier Dalton McGuinty's Ottawa constituency office tomorrow in a bid to save the vital mental health centre from closure.

The Roberts/Smart board of directors announced they are considering bankruptcy due to years of provincial underfunding. Robert Smart is only one of two agencies in the province that provides specialized mental health support to youth.

Workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 2376, will deliver the message:

"Save the Roberts/Smart Centre - Fund youth mental health!"

WHAT: Info-picket in support of the Roberts/Smart Centre
WHO: Members of CUPE 2376 and supporters
WHERE: Dalton McGuinty's office, 1795 Kilborn Ave., Ottawa
WHEN: Wednesday, May 27, 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM

Need has grown, but funding has been flat-lined. The provincial government has increased funding for children and youth mental health services only 3 times in the past 15 years. The crisis at Roberts/Smart is an example of a wider problem facing the children and youth's mental health system - gross underfunding and inaction by the McGuinty government.

Closing Roberts/Smart is not an option, says CUPE. The government must show that the mental health of children and youth is a priority.
