CUPE National Welcomes Pension Reform Initiative

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 19, 2009) - "We are satisfied that a pan-Canadian initiative has emerged as a consensus from the pension summit in Whitehorse. We are also pleased that public consultations will be held, and that all options, including labour's preferred option - expanding the CPP by increasing premiums but also increasing benefits - has been included," said CUPE National President Paul Moist.

"It is time for concrete progress on the looming issue of retirement insecurity, with 11 million workers without a workplace pension, and only 30 per cent of Canadians participating in RRSP savings," he added.

CUPE National will be a full participant in the public consultations and in this impending national debate.
