TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 15, 2010) - CUPE school board and hospital locals gathered in Truro today for contract talks have collected $8,100 for earthquake relief in Haiti.

The 14 locals donated $4,050 themselves which is being matched by CUPE Nova Scotia for the total figure.

In addition, the Nova Scotia Highway Workers Union (CUPE Local 1867) has donated $1,000.

CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh says, "Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Canadians who perished in the earthquake, as well as those who are still awaiting word on loved ones who were in Haiti.

"We also want to encourage every CUPE local in the province and all the other unions to rise to the challenge issued by Premier Dexter to do their part for this critically important relief effort. The people of Haiti need as much assistance as we can possibly give them right now," says Cavanagh.
