CWB Directed to Pay Salary of Interim President

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 26, 2007) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, issued the following statement regarding the Governor-in-Council Direction Order instructing the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) to pay their interim President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Arason.

"The Minister has the power to appoint an interim president and to set his compensation.

"Five weeks after I appointed Mr. Arason as interim President and Chief Executive Officer of the Wheat Board, and the CWB's Board of Directors accepted his appointment, he has yet to be paid.

"It is important to have an interim President and Chief Executive Officer in place who is working for farmers and has the tools to direct and manage the day-to-day operations of the CWB.

"I am sure the CWB Board of Directors agrees, however some Board members have been unwilling to pay Mr. Arason and provide him with the necessary signing authorities to do his job.

"Canada's New Government is committed to providing marketing choice to Western grain farmers, while continuing to preserve a strong, yet voluntary Canadian Wheat Board as one of those marketing choices."

This Direction is given under Section 18 (1) of the Canadian Wheat Board Act and will be published in the Canada Gazette.
