Calgarians Dig Deep to Help CBC Suncor Food Bank Drive Reach Its Goal

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 24, 2009) - The 2009 CBC Suncor Food Bank Drive reached its $800,000 goal with an amazing $846,695 in food and cash donations raised so far. Calgarians have demonstrated that they are willing to dig deep to help those in need, even when a tough economic year has put a strain on many.

"Calgary has always been a city that cares," said James McAra, Chief Executive Officer of the Calgary Food Bank. "The support and generosity that Calgarians have shown their neighbors during these tough economic times have been overwhelming. One person can make a difference, and together we will continue to work towards a future where no one goes hungry."

"For CBC Calgary this campaign is not only about fundraising but also about bringing the community together in support of a common need," said Helen Henderson, Program Director for CBC Calgary. "For many Calgarians, the need has never been greater. As a community partner, CBC is proud to have helped raise $846,695 this year and millions more for the Food Bank over the years."

The CBC Petro-Canada Food Bank Drive started 23 years ago. With the merger of Suncor and Petro-Canada, the tradition continues this year as the CBC Suncor Food Bank Drive in support of the Calgary Food Bank. Legacy Petro-Canada retirees staff the donation desk in the Suncor Energy Centre, and Brookfield Properties, which manages the building, also contributes significantly to the success of the drive's activities through another donation desk located at Fifth Avenue Place.

"The success of this year's campaign is a true testament of the generosity of our city. We're very grateful to our fellow Calgarians for their wonderful kindness, especially during these challenging economic times," said Sue Lee, Senior Vice-President, Human Resources and Communications. "These donations enable the Food Bank to distribute food to families in need, which is so important particularly during this holiday season."

The staff and volunteers at the Food Bank, CBC and Suncor Energy would like to thank everyone who so generously contributed to this outstanding campaign.

Donations will still be accepted at CBC today until noon and online at www.calgaryfoodbank.com until January 1st.
