Calgary Food Bank: City Wide Food Drive Celebrates 5 Years of Families Helping Families

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 14, 2009) - 2009 marks the 5th anniversary of the City Wide Food Drive. This tradition has raised more than 1.5 million pounds of food for the Calgary Food Bank. Last year more than 89,000 Calgarians came to the Food Bank and 43% of those were children.

Since September 2008 demand for Emergency Food Hampers has increased by more than 40%. Now more than ever hunger affects someone you know. Families helping families is the key to fighting hunger in our city. Your support will help fill hungry people with hope assist those who are hungry for months to follow.

This week some 7,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be visiting more than 370,000 Calgary homes to drop off a donation bag and flyer. Residents can donate by simply placing non-perishable food items on their doorsteps before 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 19.

On Saturday, volunteers will retrace their steps and pick up donations by 1 p.m. and drop them off at various collection points throughout the city. Transportation companies are donating their resources to haul the food to the Calgary Food Bank. Cash and corporate donations are also welcome to help us continue to provide quality food to those in need.

This is an opportunity for Calgarians to once again demonstrate their compassion and commitment to families helping families.
