Calgary Food Bank: Theatre Calgary's Toonies for Turkeys Raises $1,000,000

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2009) - After tonight's performance of A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary, and in response to Scrooge's (well-known Calgary actor Stephen Hair) call from the stage, patrons choosing to make a donation in support of Toonies for Turkeys will lift this amazing seasonal tradition to and beyond a significant milestone... raising $1,000,000 for the Calgary Food Bank.

"The true spirit of the season always comes from those who make our community vibrant. It is often the actions of a few that lead the way and remind everyone how much we all care." Says James McAra, Calgary Food Bank CEO. "I am grateful Theatre Calgary patrons are willing to support Stephen Hair and the cast in helping to provide for those in need in our community."

"It is truly humbling to reach one million dollars in donations", says Stephen Hair, the well-known Calgary actor who has played the role of Ebenezer Scrooge for the past 16 years. "Our incredible audiences have just kept on giving every year, regardless if it is their first time at the show or their fifteenth. I never imagined that this was possible." Theatre Calgary will be providing all audience members who contribute with a special commemorative photo of the occasion.

For the last seven years Toonies for Turkeys has generously been supported by Canadian Tire and Canadian Tire Jumpstart. "Canadian Tire has always given back to the communities it serves and it has been a privilege to be associated with Theatre Calgary and the 'Toonies for Turkeys' initiative for over seven years," explains Rob Hatch, owner of the Cochrane Canadian Tire store and the Canadian Tire JumpStart representative for Alberta. "A Christmas Carol is a great lesson in humanity," adds Hatch. "Touching even one family is a huge step for any community."
