Calgary Veterans Receive $88,000 Gift Just in Time for Holidays

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 2, 2009) - The Calgary Veterans' Food Bank received a welcome $88,000 donation last night, a gift that will allow the organization to respond to the growing need for its services throughout the year.

"This major donation means we can do considerably more for veterans who are often housebound and in need of greater mobility, especially over the winter," said George Bittman, of the Calgary Veterans' Food Bank.

The Veterans' Food Bank assists needy veterans, their widows and dependents with medical care, housing, food, medical equipment and dental care. Stair-lifts, wheelchair access, and scooter sheds are examples of the kind of support provided by the organization, in addition to staple food supplies. The Christmas season is an especially emotional time for veterans, who receive both emotional and financial support from The Calgary Veterans' Food Bank.

The money was generated by at-the-door donations from over 1500 Calgarians at a free public Christmas celebration featuring recording artists The Canadian Tenors, Carol Welsman, mentalist, comedian and illusionist Danny ZZZ, and nine-year old Calgary piano prodigy Christian Laurien.

This is the first year the public was invited to this annual event and one-hundred percent of the donations went directly to the cause. The free concert was presented by Prairie Merchant Corporation and hosted by businessman, philanthropist and Dragons' Den panellist W. Brett Wilson.

"Supporting our troops and veterans needs to be an all-year effort. I was thrilled to see the public response for this important cause, and to pay public tribute to veterans and military troops who continue to serve so we can all enjoy peace, the ultimate proof that freedom is not free," said Wilson.
