Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: February Housing Starts Higher in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 8, 2010) - According to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), housing starts in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) totaled 27 units in February, up from the 3 units started in February 2009.

"Lower inventories of completed new homes available for sale means starts must rise as demand strengthens," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "With the resale market tightening and borrowing costs stable, prospects for the spring market appear positive" added Stevenson.

Starts in the Windsor area included 23 single-detached homes and 4 townhouse units last month, with the total up nine times from February 2009 figures. Year-to-date, builders started 39 single-detached homes and four townhouse units in the Windsor CMA, up 153 per cent from the first two months of 2009.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
