Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Hamilton Starts Up in February

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 8, 2010) - Preliminary data released today by CMHC show that there were 372 new home starts in February in the Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). Over one-third of the starts occurred in the city center and were intended for the rental market. Starts of housing intended for private ownership rose to nearly match the level set in February 2008 when housing starts held strong. Single-detached starts – which accounted for approximately half of the ownership housing starts last month - more than tripled, led by increases in Hamilton and Grimsby. In Burlington, there was a notable rise in semi-detached starts, though total starts decreased by 62 per cent.

"Rising starts in Hamilton suggest there was some improvement in new home construction last month. Much of the boost came from the rental housing side of the market," said Sarah Fong, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton and Brantford.
