Canada Post: Clear Away Snow and Ice from the Access to Your Mailbox

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 19, 2007) - A total of 87 slips and falls caused by winter conditions were reported by letter carriers in the National Capital Region between November 2005 and March 2006. Many of these had serious consequences, causing major injuries and even forcing some letter carriers off work for an extended period.

With the cooperation of each one of you, we can considerably reduce the number of injuries resulting from slips and falls. Please take a few minutes to clear, shovel and de-ice the access to your mailbox, to ensure the safety of your letter carrier and delivery of your mail.

Our winters may be fun for many but they also bring their share of discomfort. No one knows this better than letter carriers, who must cope with winter conditions. Letter carriers must negotiate their way through an obstacle course or howling cold winds, as well as snow blizzards and worst of all, ice. Every year, these trying climatic conditions result in falls on ice or snow-covered stairways or walkways leading to homes, and on slippery sidewalks.

Letter carriers are available for interviews upon request.
