Canada Revenue Agency: June 15 filing deadline approaches for self-employed individuals

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 8, 2010) - The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, reminds self-employed individuals and their spouses or common-law partners that the June 15 deadline for filing their individual income tax returns is one week away.

"It's important for Canadians to file their returns in order to take advantage of the tax relief measures available to them," said Minister Ashfield. "Filing a return on time can also help taxpayers with self-employment income to better plan and manage their business endeavours."

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) would like to remind self-employed individuals and their spouses or common-law partners that they have until midnight on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, to file their income tax returns. If they had an outstanding balance for 2009, it had to be paid on or before April 30, 2010, to avoid interest. A late-filing penalty on amounts owing will apply to returns received or postmarked after June 15, 2010.

By using the CRA's EFILE, NETFILE, and TELEFILE services, Canadians can prepare and file their returns easily and ensure those returns are processed more quickly. For more information on the CRA's electronic services, go to www.cra.gc.ca/electronicservices.
