Canada and Ontario Support Ottawa Boys and Girls Club Renovations

Improved facilities will allow Club to better serve local youth

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 1, 2010) - The governments of Canada and Ontario today announced joint federal-provincial funding to support renovations to the main Britannia clubhouse of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. The Honourable John Baird, Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister and Member of Parliament for Ottawa West–Nepean, and Bob Chiarelli, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa–West Nepean, made the announcement in Ottawa. They were joined by Graham MacMillan, President of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa.

"The Boys and Girls Club does an outstanding job of enriching the lives of our youth by helping Ottawa's kids develop the life skills they need to reach their full potential," said Minister Baird. "Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our Government has announced an historic number of projects to help strengthen our city, and today's announcement will enable the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa to continue their great service to our community."

"Today's investment in the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa is another demonstration of the McGuinty government's commitment to strengthening our communities and is an important part of our Open Ontario plan to create jobs and opportunities for Ontario working families," said Mr. Chiarelli. "This investment will not only help deliver valued community services, help create jobs and stimulate our local economy, but will also improve the quality of life for Ottawa's youth."

"The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa is delighted to have this incredible opportunity to improve the lives of hundreds of young people in Ottawa. This support will ensure that our facility is ready for the future, offering incredible programs in an environment that inspires our kids and families," said Mr. MacMillan.

The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa has been providing local young people with high-quality after-school, weekend and summer programming for 87 years. Renovations funded through this project will contribute to the building's long-term viability and help the organization serve over 1,200 local area children and young people.

The governments of Canada and Ontario will each contribute up to $410,000 toward eligible project costs. The Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa will also provide $410,000 to the project. The total eligible project cost is $1.23 million.

The Government of Canada's $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is a key component of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The Province of Ontario's contribution comes from the 2009 provincial budget, Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future, Ontario's two-year, $32.5-billon infrastructure investment that is creating jobs and strengthening Ontario's economy. The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund invests in infrastructure projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011.

To date, the governments of Canada and Ontario have announced over $11 billion in joint funding for more than 2,600 infrastructure projects across the province to stimulate the economy and create jobs.
