Canada's Economic Action Plan - Construction of Five New Search and Rescue Vessels Will Maximize Safety and Strengthen the Economy

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Aug. 31, 2009) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade, Asia Pacific Gateway and Regional Minister for British Columbia, today announced on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, the award of a contract valued at $19.6 million to a shipbuilding company in Victoria, B.C.

Under the contract, Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd. will build five new 47-foot motor lifeboats for the Canadian Coast Guard. Funding for the five new vessels is provided under Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"Our Government is investing in sustainable growth, creating the right economic conditions to encourage industry to invest and flourish," said Minister Day. "This project will create jobs and stimulate the economy."

The new vessels will be used by the Canadian Coast Guard for Search and Rescue operations across the country. Two of the vessels will be based in British Columbia and one each in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

These vessels will be the latest additions to the existing fleet of 31 47-foot motor lifeboats, introduced to the Canadian Coast Guard in 1999 and later. The basic design was obtained from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) following their extensive testing. The USCG design was modified to best fit the needs of the Canadian Coast Guard.

"Our Government is following through on its commitment to fleet renewal and having federal ships built in Canada," said Minister Day. "We recognize Canada's marine industry is a key economic driver and the lifeblood of many communities, from coast to coast to coast."

The contract award is the result of a competitive process carried out throughout Canada. The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that the Canadian Coast Guard has the vessels it needs, that Canadian taxpayers receive the best value for their money and that Canadian industry benefits from this procurement. The vessels will be delivered by March 2011.
