Canada's Economic Action Plan Invests in Businesses and Creates Jobs in Port Colborne

PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO --(Marketwire - April 8, 2010) - Port Colborne area residents will benefit from an investment of $3,662,450 to reconstruct Main Street, announced today by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), and Rick Dykstra, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines.

"This investment will create jobs and stimulate the local economy," said Minister Goodyear. "Our government is working with the people, businesses and communities of southern Ontario to help our region prosper now and in the future."

"Our government's Economic Action Plan is investing in communities and businesses that have been hardest hit," said MP Dykstra. "We are creating jobs today that will benefit the residents of Port Colborne, while ensuring long-term economic opportunities for our businesses and workers."

Port Colborne will work with the Region of Niagara, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, and the Gateway Association to attract new business and investment through the enhancement and reconstruction of its Main Street.

"This funding for the Gateway/Main Street revitalization is great news for the citizens of our community," said Mr. Vance Badawey, Mayor of the City of Port Colborne. "We truly appreciate the unprecedented financial support from the federal government, which has enabled our community to leverage funds and accelerate capital projects with no impact to the property taxpayer."

This project will be funded under the Community Adjustment Fund in southern Ontario, which will create immediate employment opportunities and support the local economies that have been struggling with the effects of the global economic downturn. Other projects approved under the Community Adjustment Fund will be announced over the coming weeks. Approved projects must meet the terms and conditions set out in their contribution agreements.

FedDev Ontario was created as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan to support economic and community development, innovation, and economic diversification with contributions to communities, businesses and non-profit organizations in southern Ontario.
