Canada's New Government to Undertake Major Restoration Work at Quebec City's Coast Guard Base

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 11, 2007) - On behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Member of Parliament for Levis-Bellechasse, Steven Blaney, today announced an investment of $12.2 million for the restoration of three buildings located on the Canadian Coast Guard base in Quebec City.

"Through this investment, Canada's New Government recognizes the importance of the Canadian Coast Guard's presence in Quebec City and is very pleased to help maintain the city's heritage," said Mr Blaney. "Most of the major restoration work will help to enhance the area's architectural landscape, just in time for Quebec 2008."

The work in question will involve the former customs building, which is classified as a heritage building, as well as the heliport and an office and storage building.

The former customs building was constructed in 1831 and primarily houses offices and meeting rooms. It will be restored to ensure the safety of users and the public, while respecting and showcasing its heritage character. The work on the heliport, where helicopter fleet activities are carried out, will involve a complete refitting of the building interior to give occupants more space while complying with the new safety standards in effect. The work on the office and storage building will involve rebuilding the entire exterior envelope of the structure, as well as interior work, including the replacement of the heating system and the upgrade of the plumbing.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the project managers will try to minimize the impact of the work as much as possible on the area's merchants and residents, as well as the community as a whole. To limit the inconvenience, the outdoor work will be performed outside the tourist season.
