Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse Announces the Reappointment Of Dr. Darryl Plecas to Its Board of Directors

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 10, 2009) - The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) is pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Darryl Plecas to CCSA's Board of Directors for a second, three-year term. As named by the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Dr. Plecas sits as one of five Governor in Council appointees on CCSA's Board of Directors.

In its ongoing efforts to reduce the harms associated with alcohol and other drugs, CCSA welcomes the continued opportunity to benefit from the extensive knowledge, passion and strategic guidance that Dr. Plecas has imparted since joining the Board in 2006.

"Dr. Plecas has been an invaluable member of CCSA over the past three years and we are pleased that his expert knowledge in the field of education, criminology and research will continue to inform the organization," said Dr. Anne Lavack, Interim Chair of the Board, CCSA. "As the social and international complexities of substance abuse grow, it is the expert advice and guidance of individuals such as Dr. Plecas that enable CCSA to implement programs, priorities and collective efforts that will effectively contribute towards a Canadian society free from the harms of alcohol and other drugs."

With over 30 years of research and teaching experience and over 150 authored or co-authored research reports, Dr. Plecas stands as one of Canada's foremost authorities within the field of criminology and education. He is currently the RCMP University Research Chair and Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice Research in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Dr. Plecas has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Public Safety for his work on the project "Eliminating Marihuana Grow Operations: An Alternative Approach", the Order of Abbotsford and Citizen of the Year award, and the University of Fraser Valley Teaching Excellence Award.

Dr. Plecas also brings to CCSA's Board of Directors an intimate understanding of international affairs and has served as an Associate of the International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice policy at the University of British Columbia, as an Expert Observer to the 10th UN Congress on the Prevention and Treatment of Offenders, and as an invited participant at the UN Scientific and Professional Advisory Committee.

CCSA's volunteer Board of Directors is comprised of 14 distinguished members from diverse sectors, including public health, research and science, business, government and law enforcement. The Chair and four members are named by the Governor in Council, and nine additional members-at-large are appointed by the Board.
