Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA): Health Hazard Alert - M & M Meat Shops Breaded Shrimp and Coconut Shrimp May Contain Nitrofurans

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 2, 2007) - Audio clips available at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/direct/media/.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Henry H. Misner Limited are warning the public not to consume the M & M Meat Shops Breaded Shrimp and Coconut Shrimp products described below because these products may be contaminated with Nitrofurans.

The following M & M Meat Shops products, sold frozen, are affected by this alert:

1. M & M Meat Shops Breaded Shrimp, 400 g package, Lot code 2787

2. M & M Meat Shops Coconut Shrimp, 400 g package, Lot code 2677

These products have been distributed nationally.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Nitrofurans are antimicrobial drugs which are banned for use in Canada in food producing animals. Consumption of foods contaminated with nitrofurans may pose a human health risk related to the toxicity of the drug.

The manufacturer, Henry H. Misner Limited, Port Dover, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
