Canadian Hemophilia Society to Attend Press Conference and Meeting With Federal Health Minister Regarding Pre-1986, Post-1990 Hepatitis C Compensation

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - June 5, 2006) - Representatives from the Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS) will be in Ottawa tomorrow morning (Tuesday, June 6, 2006), to encourage the Conservative Government to honour its campaign promise to immediately compensate all Canadians infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) through tainted blood, regardless of when they became infected. Several months have passed since the federal election and people are still waiting to be compensated.

John Plater, Chair of the CHS' Task Force on Hepatitis C and HIV indicates that, "The CHS has always advocated for just compensation for all who contracted hepatitis C through the blood supply, regardless of when they became infected. The federal government claimed at the time that there were no tests available prior to 1986 that could detect hepatitis C in blood. It has been demonstrated that tests did exist prior to 1986, and that if implemented, they could have prevented many people from contracting HCV."

Approximately 5,000 to 6,000 people who were infected through tainted blood outside the 86-90 window could file claims for compensation.

The Canadian Hemophilia Society is a non-profit organization, striving since 1953 to improve the health and quality of life for all people with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders, and to find a cure.
