Canadian Merchant Navy Veteran Recognized for Lifetime of Service to Comrades

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Suzanne Tining, Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada, today paid special tribute to Eugene McDonald, a Second World War Veteran. Ms. Tining presented Mr. McDonald with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in a private ceremony in Ottawa.

"Every year, the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation pays tribute to exceptional and highly committed individuals who have dedicated themselves to service and leadership for our Veterans," stated Minister Thompson. "They do so with quiet dignity, without asking for anything in return."

"To Eugene McDonald, being a member of the Merchant Navy, and serving his fellow Veterans, is second nature," said Ms. Tining in presenting the Commendation Award. "Today we honour him for his incredible efforts in keeping alive the memory of those he served with and what they served for."

Mr. McDonald served in the Canadian Merchant Navy from 1943 to 1945 and joined the Canadian Merchant Navy Association in 1990 in the position of assistant treasurer. He has served as an Association representative at numerous commemorative services, both nationally and internationally.

The Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation consists of a bar, which can be worn below official decorations on a Veteran's blazer, a lapel pin for civilian wear and a certificate.

The Commendation is presented to individuals who have contributed to the care and well-being of Veterans and to the remembrance of their contributions, sacrifices and achievements. It is intended primarily for Veterans, but in some circumstances may also be awarded to non-Veterans. Nominations may be submitted by the public at any time and are reviewed annually by an advisory committee.
