Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)-BC: Paramedics to 'Welcome' New Government

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 5, 2009) - Striking ambulance paramedics are heading to Victoria Monday to greet the new provincial government and remind MLAs that they are still on strike.

Paramedics from across the province are planning to converge outside the B.C. Legislature during the official swearing-in ceremony at 12 noon Monday.

B.C.'s 3,500 ambulance paramedics have been on strike for more than two months for faster response times, better staffing levels, wage parity with other emergency responders and a multi-year contract. The paramedics continue to provide ambulance services under Essential Services.

The CUPE 873 paramedics want the provincial government and the Ministry of Health to appoint an independent mediator to help reach a collective agreement. The paramedics are scheduled to meet with government representatives next Thursday and Friday to discuss outstanding issues.
