Catholic Healthcare West Makes $3 Million in Grant Awards

Not-for-Profit Healthcare Provider Contributed Nearly $30 Million to Community Organizations Since 1990

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - January 8, 2008) - Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the eighth largest hospital system in the nation, announced today that it has made more than $3 million in grant awards to non-profit organizations in California, Arizona and Nevada, up from $2.7 million the year prior.

Grant awardees were notified in December 2007, following approval from the CHW Board of Directors' Investment Committee. Awards were made to 196 organizations in the communities served by CHW hospitals.

Recipients include a $50,000 grant to the Shasta Community Health Center in Redding, California for its healthcare for the homeless program; a $25,000 grant to Fresh Start Women's Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona to provide prevention and early intervention of domestic violence; and a $25,000 grant to the St. Therese Center in Las Vegas, Nevada to support the nutritional health needs of community members infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

"These grants are an important part of the care we provide," said Lloyd H. Dean, president/chief executive officer of CHW. "As we deliver excellent care at our hospitals and health centers we also want to foster healthy communities. These grants are helping expand the resources that strengthen the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve."

CHW's community grants program is funded through donations from its member hospitals, which contribute .05 percent of their previous year's audited expenses to the program. Grant awards typically range from $2,000 to $50,000. Since 1990, CHW has awarded nearly $30 million in grants to local non-profit organizations.

"We are so grateful to Catholic Healthcare West for supporting the health and wellbeing of women through Fresh Start's programs and services," said Barbara Ralston, chief executive officer of the Fresh Start Women's Foundation. "This grant will allow us to provide enhanced services to women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse. A majority of the women we serve are battling this issue and, with CHW's funding, we will be able to improve the education and support with regards to safety measures, coping strategies and creating healthier lives for themselves and their families."

"CHW's support is so important and goes a long way in helping us improve the health and wellbeing of our community, particularly those who are most vulnerable," said Dr. Momo Kurosaka, medical director for Shasta Community Health Center's healthcare for the homeless program, known as HOPE. "These funds will assist us with the costs associated with lab tests and needed medications for those who are uninsured and who are homeless. They will also help us with improved wireless technology that will link our Electronic Medical Records at our main clinic site with our mobile clinics."

To be selected for a CHW grant, the organization or program must meet one or more of the following criteria:

--  Address the greatest health needs of the community;
-- Emphasize prevention to address the underlying cause of health
    problems;
--  Contribute to a seamless continuum of care;
-- Build upon and mobilize existing services in the community; and
-- Engage diverse community stakeholders in implementation and oversight.
