UCMAS Canada Inc. held an official Awards Ceremony on April 25, 2010 at the Pearson International Centre in Brampton, Ontario to announce the winners of its 5th Annual Canadian Competition held earlier in April. About 1,500 UCMAS Mental Math™ students aged 4 to 13 participated in the competition that entailed solving approximately 200 arithmetic questions in 8 minutes using only their Abacus or Mental Math.

"We are very proud of the remarkable skills our students have developed in the UCMAS Mental Math™ and Abacus program in areas such as visual memory, concentration, creativity and multi-tasking", said Anand Karia, President and CEO of UCMAS Canada Inc. "Our students, some of them as young as four years old, have competed in a challenging exam and demonstrated a high level of excellence in their performance in the competition". This year, UCMAS awarded 620 prizes to the top students competing from across Canada including the Greater Toronto Area, Calgary and Montreal.

The highest honours were given to the 38 champions who attained the top scores in the mental math examination within their UCMAS category. "This is an experience these kids will always remember and as their instructors, our greatest reward is to watch the level of self-confidence these kids exhibit as they receive their well deserved awards", observed Pooja Sundar, Chief Instructor at UCMAS Canada. Sundar explained, "The effort and dedication pays-off, as all our students, especially champions like 6 year old Thilakshan Suthersana of Scarborough; 6 year old Brett Yang from Mississauga, 7 year old Sajevan Sivathas from Markham and 12 year old Krisha Patel of Toronto, are able to readily apply the skills they've mastered in the UCMAS program not only in the exam but more importantly to every aspect of their lives including school academics".

"The students get energized by the competition where they get to demonstrate the skills they've acquired in the UCMAS Mental Math™ program." noted Dr Tim Singh, Principal of the International Languages Program at the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Dr. Singh, who handed out some of the awards, observed, "The excitement level was quite high with the audience's anticipation of announcing the award recipients and the champions for each UCMAS level". The champions in each category will be invited to attend the International UCMAS Competition that takes place in Malaysia in November.

UCMAS Canada Inc. offers the UCMAS Mental Math™ program for children aged 4 to 13 through 30 centres located in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. The UCMAS Mental Math™ program, which was established in Canada in 2004, was pioneered in 1993 in Asia and has since grown to 5,000 centres worldwide in countries such as the United States, Great Britain, Spain, Australia, India, China and Malaysia. This program helps boost brainpower by teaching kids to perform mental math using the abacus in a way that children find engaging and instructive. Described as "Mental Aerobics", the UCMAS program improves the child's focus, concentration and memory, leads to proficiency in math and enhances overall academic achievement.
