Cementhai Chemicals Launches Web Technology Initiative With GT Nexus

Thailand's Largest Industrial Conglomerate Integrates With Industry-Backed Shipping Portal to Connect With Ocean Carriers, Automate Global Freight Transactions

ALAMEDA, CA and BANGKOK, THAILAND -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 12, 2005 -- GT Nexus announced today an agreement with Cementhai Chemicals Co. Ltd. (CCC) to provide integrated electronic shipment transaction services through the company's industry-backed, multi-carrier transaction platform for seafreight management.

Cementhai Chemicals is wholly owned by The Siam Cement Public Company Ltd., Thailand's largest industrial conglomerate with leading market positions in each of its core businesses of cement, petrochemicals, and paper and packaging.

The project calls for CCC to integrate with the GT Nexus industry portal to take advantage of industry-standard shipment automation technology, utilizing the platform as the integration "hub" for connectivity to multiple ocean carriers, and for electronic processing of cargo information with those carriers worldwide.

"This is a strategic business initiative for CCC," said Somchai Wattanataweekul, Supply Chain Manager at CCC. "The portal connects us to many ocean carriers, and allows us to replace manual work with standard, electronic transactions. We improve the speed and accuracy of data we send to carriers, and reduce the costs to manage it. That creates benefits for both of us."

The first transaction set, which goes into production shortly, will enable CCC to send electronic "bookings," or reservations for cargo space, to ocean carriers, and to receive booking confirmations from carriers. The integration will use an XML standard for electronic data interchange between CCC and the GT Nexus platform.

Later phases of the project will address integration for other common industry transaction sets, including shipment documentation (bill of lading instructions) and shipment status (track and trace).

CCC is one of Thailand's largest exporters and a major producer of plastic resins, shipping nearly 30,000 TEUs (full ocean containers) of product annually to customers around the world.

How it works

Previously, CCC was doing bookings with ocean carrier partners via email, phone and fax. This process meant that the carriers had to manually re-enter the information into their systems, which was inefficient, error-prone and time-consuming.

By integrating with GT Nexus, CCC helps its ocean carriers gain efficiencies by eliminating manual, duplicate data entry and speeding the transmission of time-sensitive information. Cementhai also gains internal efficiencies and extends the utility of its existing systems, which are used for initial preparation of the booking request. Once the request is ready, it is sent electronically as an integrated message into the GT Nexus industry portal, where it is translated and formatted, and automatically transmitted into the back-office operating system of the participating ocean line -- mapped to the data specifications of those individual carrier systems. Paper-based work is eliminated and manual intervention with the transaction is minimized.

The GT Nexus program allows CCC to leverage a single "integration hub" to hook up with many carriers, using standardized, automated data processes that are consistent across all carriers for transmitting electronic bookings. CCC improves data accuracy and timeliness, and is relieved of the technical burden to build and manage expensive, one-off electronic integrations directly with each individual ocean carrier.

GT Nexus operates the industry portal for a consortium of global shipping lines. It is deployed as a Web-hosted service combining shipment management software applications with a central data store and integration technologies, provisioned over the Internet. No installation of hardware or software is required at the customer's facility. The platform provides a single, global business process used by all organizations participating in the movement of international ocean cargo, including importers and exporters, consolidators, freight forwarders, 3PLs and carriers.

"CCC is an excellent example of a forward-looking organization embracing the power of an industry utility to enhance service to their customers and reduce supply chain costs," said John Urban, GT Nexus president. "As one of Thailand's largest industrial concerns and biggest exporters, they will bring considerable volumes to the portal, driving further efficiencies to carriers as well as their internal business processes."
