Charlotte, N.C., Receives 'Ambassador' Designation From Realtors®, Mayors

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - April 23, 2010) - The National Association of Realtors® and the U.S. Conference of Mayors have designated Charlotte, N.C., as a 2010 Ambassador City for the city's Realtors® Care Day, a volunteer home repair event.

Realtors® Care Day was created by the Charlotte Regional Realtor® Association Housing Opportunity Foundation to assist area homeowners with critical exterior home repairs and provide adaptive and safety modifications for elderly and disabled residents. This is the second year that the event has taken place.

"Realtors® build communities and care as much about sustaining homeownership as we do about helping people buy and sell their homes," said NAR President Vicki Cox Golder, owner of Vicki L. Cox & Associates in Tucson, Ariz. "There are many people in Charlotte and across the country that lack the financial resources or physical ability to maintain and repair their homes. The projects being completed today through Realtors® Care Day are critical to keeping those families in their homes."

More than 650 local Realtors® will volunteer their time today to complete the repairs and safety modifications to about 30 homes in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties. The city helped identify the homeowners, who are either employed or retired; however, their financial situation makes it difficult to afford the necessary repairs or modifications to their home. Realtor® crews will replace and repair roofs and gutters, paint home exteriors, and complete a variety of modification projects.

At an event this morning, Realtor® Jim Helsel, NAR treasurer, and Realtor® Chris Clemans, 2010 chair of NAR's Housing Opportunity Committee, joined Dave Gatton, U.S. Conference of Mayors, to present the Ambassador for Cities plaque and a $5,000 check to 2010 Charlotte Regional Realtor® Association President Lyn Kessie and Charlotte City Council Representative Patsy Kinsey.

NAR and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, through its Council on the New American City, launched the Ambassadors for Cities program in 2003 to encourage cities and local Realtor® associations to form partnerships to promote affordable housing and homeownership.

The National Association of Realtors®, "The Voice for Real Estate," is America's largest trade association, representing 1.2 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries.
