Chevron Honors Davis Wright Tremaine LLP With Diversity Award for Second Consecutive Year

Chevron Will Donate $5,000 in Firm's Name to Diversity Pipeline Program in San Francisco; Davis Wright to Match Donation for Similar Program in Los Angeles

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - August 17, 2010) -   For the second consecutive year, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has been selected as one of three recipients of Chevron's Law Firm Diversity Award. Established in 2005, the award recognizes Chevron's law firm partners that have distinguished themselves by demonstrating their commitment to diversity.

Chevron -- in recognition of Davis Wright's diversity efforts -- will again make a $5,000 donation in the firm's name to Destination Law School, a diversity pipeline program with the San Francisco Bar Association (Destination Law School was also the recipient of the donation in 2009 as a part of this award). In addition, the firm announced they will match Chevron's donation of $5,000 to launch a partnership with the Los Angeles Metro Debate League, a diversity pipeline program in Los Angeles.

"Davis Wright's commitment to these programs that help aspiring lawyers from diverse backgrounds is to be commended," said Josetta Jones, in-house counsel with Chevron Corporation and chair of the legal department's Diversity Council. "The firm truly believes in extending diversity as a core value beyond their walls and into the legal community as a whole, and these pipeline programs are doing tremendous work."

Long recognized as a global leader in supporting diversity and fostering inclusion, Chevron has encouraged its business partners to join it in promoting principles and practices that allow all individuals to reach their full potential.

"One of the things I know Chevron recognizes, and that we embrace as well, is that you begin to make a difference with partnership and with engagement," said Karen Russell, Davis Wright's manager of diversity initiatives. "We partner with our clients and these organizations and our attorneys actively participate in these programs. The financial contributions are a part of it, but it's not just a check, and a handshake, and 'We're done.' We like to follow the money. It's an investment and a start of a commitment to getting involved."

Chevron's donation last year to Destination Law School helped, among other things, pay for 10 students to take bar review courses to help put them on the path to becoming lawyers. But, as Davis Wright partner Salle Yoo noted, the true difference came in the direct involvement with the program and with the students.

"Recently, Josetta and I spoke to the students about our experiences as diverse, women attorneys working in different sectors in the law," said Yoo. "Josetta spoke from the perspective of an in-house lawyer with a major U.S. corporation and I talked about being a partner of a large Am Law 100 firm.

"After the discussion, one of the students approached me and said he was surprised to see me as the partner from a law firm. You could see that it made an impression on him and convinced him that opportunities exist in the legal profession for minorities. These are the interactions that you strive for, and it happened with the program in San Francisco, and I'm excited to work with my colleagues who are getting involved with the program in Los Angeles."

By adding the program in Los Angeles, Davis Wright now has relationships with pipeline programs or minority law student scholarship programs in Northern California, Southern California, Oregon and Washington state. The firm also provides mentoring and coaching programs for diverse associates, including an innovative mentoring partnership program it began last year with client Microsoft.

"We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Chevron on diversity and we're honored to receive this award," said Russell. "It reinforces the importance of diversity and inclusion, and it motivates us to continue to partner with our clients and the organizations who share that mission. We're also excited to begin working with the Los Angles Metro Debate League. These debate leagues in urban schools are creating a diverse pipeline of talented high-school students who are interested in and well-prepared for college, law school and legal careers."
