Chick-fil-A Founder Truett Cathy's Grandson to Open Chain's Newest Stand-Alone Restaurant in Durham January 10

Location Marks the Third Grandson of the Third Cathy Generation to Operate a Chick-fil-A Restaurant

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - January 9, 2008) - Chick-fil-A founder and CEO Truett Cathy and his grandson, John White IV, will open the newest Chick-fil-A restaurant in Durham on Jan. 10, by giving away $26,000 in free Chick-fil-A® food.

The new Chick-fil-A restaurant will give a one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A® Combo Meals (52 coupons) to the first 100 adults, age 18 and older with identification, in line by 6 a.m. at the stand-alone restaurant at 7836 Leonardo Dr. on Jan. 10. The line can begin forming up to 24 hours prior to the opening, with the free food prizes being awarded on Thursday, Jan. 10, between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. The restaurant will open for business at 6:30 a.m.

The first 100 customers will also have a chance to meet several Cathy family members who will be in town for the opening. Truett Cathy and all three of his children (including John's mother, Trudy Cathy White, Dan Cathy, President and Chief Operating Officer of Chick-fil-A, and Bubba Cathy, Sr. Vice President) will be attending the ceremonies, as well as two other of Cathy's 12 grandchildren who have begun their careers with Chick-fil-A.

"When you look at statistics, 80 to 90 percent of the 24 million U.S. companies are family-owned or managed, and of those, only 40 percent survive to the second generation and only 12 percent to the third generation," said Cathy, who is credited with inventing the award-winning boneless breast of chicken sandwich.

"Seeing the first two grandchildren enter the business in 2006 and now as the third opens a new location in Durham, it has brought comfort to me that the future of Chick-fil-A will remain strong with a family focus as we continue to move into our third generation," he said.

White is a graduate of Auburn University. He follows his cousins, Andrew Cathy and Mark Cathy, as the third grandson in the "third-generation" of Cathy family members to pursue a career with Chick-fil-A. He also spent 10 years of his life living in Brazil while his parents worked as missionaries. White and his wife, Kylie, have worked alongside college students preparing them for a semester in North Africa for the past two years. White is relocating from Alpharetta, Ga. to operate the new Chick-fil-A in Durham.

"I have been raised on my grandfather's philosophy -- put people first and everything else will fall into place," said White. "Coupling that foundation with the 'best practices' I've gleaned from working with other companies, I'm excited to continue Chick-fil-A's reputation for serving the freshest food possible with the highest level of customer service."

Chick-fil-A has been in the Raleigh-Durham market since 1972 when it opened its first location in Crabtree Valley Mall. To date, there are 38 Chick-fil-A restaurants in the metro-area as well as a licensed location at Duke University, North Carolina State and two at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
