Chief of the Defence Staff Visits the Middle East

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 20, 2009) - General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), has concluded today a four-day visit to the Middle East where he met Canadian Forces (CF) personnel serving in the region.

"I am very proud of the work being done by the men and women of the CF serving in the region, and pleased to have had the opportunity to meet them this week," said General Natynczyk. "Their efforts exemplify Canada's continuing leadership role in peacekeeping and peace support operations in this region."

General Natynczyk and Canadian Forces Chief Warrant Officer Greg Lacroix met with CF members serving on deployed operations in Jerusalem, El Gorah, and other regions of the Middle East:

- Op PROTEUS, located in Jerusalem, is Canada's contribution to the United States Security Coordinator (USSC) which encourages Israeli-Palestinian security coordination. http://www.comfec-cefcom.forces.gc.ca/pa-ap/ops/proteus/index-eng.asp

- Op CALUMET is Canada's contribution to the Multinational Forces and Observers peacekeeping operation in the Sinai Peninsula. http://www.comfec-cefcom.forces.gc.ca/pa-ap/ops/calumet/index-eng.asp

- Op JADE is Canada's contribution to the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) the oldest peacekeeping mission formed in 1948 to monitor and maintain the cease-fire between the state of Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. http://www.comfec-cefcom.forces.gc.ca/pa-ap/ops/jade/index-eng.asp

- Op GLADIUS is Canada's continuing participation in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) which supervises the implementation of and maintenance of the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Syria in the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War. http://www.comfec-cefcom.forces.gc.ca/pa-ap/ops/gladius/index-eng.asp

During his visit to the Middle East, the CDS also participated in bilateral meetings with the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi to foster military relationships by gaining an increased understanding of the military issues in the region.
