Christmas in Salem House Tour Features Something Old, Something New

SALEM, MA--(Marketwire - November 24, 2008) - People come to see Salem's magnificent historic houses year round, but the homes are especially beautiful when decorated for the holidays. The 29th annual holiday house tour, scheduled for December 5th, 6th, and 7th, is no exception. Sponsored by Historic Salem, Inc. (HSI), "Three Centuries of Architecture" will showcase 11 homes and properties ranging from a 17th century house associated with the Salem witch trials to homes built at the end of the 19th century.

All of this year's featured properties are located in Salem's McIntire Historic District, as is Hamilton Hall, where many related activities will take place. Designed by Samuel McIntire in 1804-05 as a gathering place for the affluent residents who were beginning to establish their magnificent homes in this new neighborhood. Hamilton Hall will be the site of lectures, decorating presentations and live music throughout both Saturday and Sunday. Ticket sales and restrooms will also be available here.

Christmas in Salem marks the beginning of the holiday season for many who have made this tour an annual tradition. Whether seeking ideas for decorations, a glimpse of historic interiors, or a relaxing visit with friends, tour goers are never disappointed. In 2008, they can look forward to a house that was divided -- literally -- following a divorce, a converted grocery store, and a treetop condominium whose owner has handcrafted much of the woodwork.

Salem's antique homes will also be complemented this year by a new promotion featuring restaurants and retailers in both Salem and neighboring Marblehead, whose annual Christmas Walk also takes place the first weekend in December. Many of the participants will be offering discounts, an added incentive to stay for dinner, revisit old favorites, or explore some of the exciting new stores and restaurants that now call Salem and Marblehead home.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 on tour days. For information on obtaining tickets or for more detailed tour information, visit www.historicsalem.org or call 978-745-0799.

Historic Salem, Inc., the tour's sponsor, is the premier preservation organization in Salem, MA.
