Chubb's Loss Control University Expands Courses and Adds Training Equipment

WARREN, NJ--(Marketwire - November 19, 2007) - The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies has expanded its class offerings available through its Loss Control University in 2008.

Chubb's Loss Control University was created to advance the fire safety knowledge and skills of facilities managers, building inspectors, fire safety system installers and sprinkler system designers. Based on customer feedback, Chubb added several classes for 2008, including slip and fall prevention and defensive driving skills. Thirty-five educational sessions are scheduled for next year, which is more than double the number of sessions offered in 2007.

"The response to Chubb's Loss Control University programs, facilities and instructors has been overwhelmingly positive," said Steven D. Hernandez, senior vice president of Chubb & Son and worldwide loss control services manager for Chubb Commercial Insurance. "We are excited to add general liability and accident prevention classes to our extensive fire safety curriculum."

Classes are conducted at Chubb's Loss Control Training Center at the company's worldwide headquarters in Warren, NJ. The training center is equipped with seven different sprinkler systems, two fire pumps and controllers, many portable fire extinguishers, smoke and fire detectors, a rolling fire door and more. A glass-walled fire chamber allows participants to see how different sprinkler systems react to fire. In addition to traditional classroom instruction and exercises, participants can operate the equipment to gain familiarity with systems found in most facilities.

Equipment recently installed at the training center includes:

-- A Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus system, which draws air to
    determine if invisible particles representing an incipient stage fire are
    present well before an occupant would be able to detect the fire;
-- An on-off pre-action sprinkler system that shuts off water flow when
    the fire is controlled; and
-- An audiovisual system with surround sound and a 10-foot screen.

The hands-on instruction is led by Chubb loss control specialists trained and certified in fire protection. The fire training center is also used as a research laboratory to perform various fire tests, including combustibility and flame tests for building material and sprinkler heads. Loss Control University's fire protection courses are approved by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety and have been incorporated into the educational curriculum for fire officials and inspectors.

"The combination of classroom instruction, live demonstrations and hands-on practice using a sprinkler system chamber provides a one-of-a-kind learning experience for participants," Hernandez said.
