City Contemporary Dance Company of Hong Kong to Premiere New Work in Performances October 17 & 18, 2008 at Pace University in New York

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - September 22, 2008) - The City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) from Hong Kong, internationally renowned for its "vibrant sense of theatre and strong visual imagery" (Washington Post) and "beautifully trained and good-looking young dancers" (New York Times) will appear in an exclusive U.S. engagement next month at Pace University's Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts in lower Manhattan. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. on October 17 and 18, 2008. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.

One of China's most acclaimed modern dance companies, CCDC came to life in 1997 with Hong Kong's reunification with China, under the artistic direction of trailblazing choreographer Willy Tsao, who five years earlier had founded the Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first professional modern dance company in China.

The company, described by Dance Europe as "so good as to be virtually beyond criticism" -- and by Stuttgarter Zeitung as "thoroughly professional [and] technically brilliant" -- is making only its third appearance in New York, presenting a program of New York and American premieres including a re-imagined version of their signature work "365 Ways of Doing and Undoing Orientalism."

The program, under the overall title "Silver Rain," "rises much above the realm of professionally crafted theatrics to an expressive world of its own, [and] unfolds as an array of contrasting theatrical visions from China's past and present." (Wall Street Journal Asia).

Tickets for the performances at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts are free, but advance ticket reservations are required. Free tickets may be reserved online at or (with a $1.50 phone service fee) by calling (212) 868-4444.

The company will also offer a free master class at Dance New Amsterdam on Chambers Street in lower Manhattan from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 16. Dancers wishing to participate in the master class should call (212) 625-8369. Space in the master class is limited by studio capacity, and offered on a first-call first-reserved basis.

Upcoming Asian dance offerings at Pace University include the Panoramasian Dance Project (PDP) initiated by Yuko Hamada and Japan Performing Arts, Inc. PDP will present its latest cross-cultural exploration of traditional Asian dance pieces infused with modern flavor at Pace's Michael Schimmel Center on Saturday, November 15, 2008 with performances at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Tickets priced at $25 General Admission ($20 students) may be purchased online at or by calling 212-868-4444.
