City of Toronto Improves Transportation Services

Partnership provides instant traffic information to Toronto commuters

Attention: City Editor, Environment Editor, News Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor, Transportation Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 22, 2009) - The City of Toronto is pleased to announce, through the cooperation of Intellione and Rogers Wireless, it has completed testing and is using real-time road speed information known as io-trafficSM from Intellione as a data source in the Toronto Transportation Service's Traffic Management Centre (TMC).

The Intellione system uses ordinary signals from mobile networks to calculate road speeds in real time, then reports traffic as a congestion map overlay on the City's internal Transnomis system. Road speeds are now measured and reported on virtually every freeway, collector and city street in the Greater Toronto Area.

"We've had the Intellione data in-house since late last year and are impressed with the accuracy, particularly when compared to traditional field measurement systems. Even more important, is the high quality coverage on major arterials and city streets, where it has never before been practical or possible to collect. During this past November's horrendous accident, when a truck rolled off the southbound ramp of Highway 427 to the Gardiner Eastbound, we were able to monitor all adjacent road congestion and thereby adjust traffic signal lights timing to improve traffic flow," said Bruce Zvaniga, P. Eng., Manager, Urban Traffic Control Systems. Another critical situation occurred in January during the west-end blackout. Our traffic engineers were able to monitor traffic back-ups almost instantaneously, enabling us to react proactively, thereby mitigating conditions for Toronto drivers and transit users."

"Rogers Wireless is pleased to work with Intellione to provide innovative technology and help the City's Transportation Services division in the management of traffic in the Greater Toronto Area," said Ddin Morbi, General Manager of Wholesale Distribution, Rogers Wireless Inc.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the City to find other ways in which io-traffic can help optimize existing road use and contribute to new roadway planning decisions," added Bill Tapscott, Managing Director for Canada at Intellione. The City is currently exploring ways to expand the capability to further benefit Toronto's growing number of commuters, including digital message boards showing drive times between common GTA landmarks.
