Coast-to-Coast Model Search Unveils Six "New Faces of Canada"

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 1, 2007) - After a coast-to-coast model search that attracted more than 1,700 entries, Vervegirl magazine has selected six teen girls to represent the "New Faces of Canada."

A seven-member jury chose one national winner and five regional winners in the search designed to celebrate the diversity of Canadian beauty. The search was made possible by sponsors Herbal Essences, CoverGirl and Elite Model Management, in partnership with Wal-Mart Canada.

National winner Diana Illy, of Mt. Albert in Ontario, was awarded a one-year professional modeling contract with Elite Model Management, while the five regional winners will have a $500 donation made to the charity of their choice. All six winners will be featured in Vervegirl magazine's 2007 Holiday issue, distributed in more than 1,500 schools across Canada.

"I have to admit I was surprised to hear I was chosen the national winner from so many amazing Canadian girls," said Illy. "I always dreamed about a career in modeling. I can't believe I've been given the opportunity to live that dream."

From east to west, the five regional "New Faces of Canada" models are : Eastern Canada winner Julie Easton, a 16-year-old from Halifax; Cynthia Desrochers, 18, representing the Quebec region; Ontario and Nunavut selection Janet Chau, 16, of Toronto; Erin Hampton, of Winnipeg, who earned recognition in the Prairies and North-West Territories region; and Annabel Francis, 16, of Vancouver, the Western Canada honouree.

To enter the model search, contestants were required to submit photos taken by a professional photographer at the "New Faces" studio in participating Wal-Mart stores, or upload their own photos to the "New Faces" Room at

The judges based their top selections on such criteria as personality communicated in the photo submission, natural beauty, smile and embodying Canada's diverse beauty. The panel of judges included actress Lauren Collins of Degrassi, the Next Generation, eTalk's (CTV) Elaine Lui of, Montreal photographer Malina Corpadean, and Elite's North American scouting director Karen Lee.

"The response to this first ever New Faces contest has been outstanding, from the enthusiastic participation by contestants to the spirit of collaboration by our partners," said Vervegirl Publisher, Kaaren Whitney-Vernon. "In creating the contest, we were confident about the wealth of beauty and talent across Canada, and the many submissions we received certainly reinforce this fact. Our panel of judges did not have an easy task selecting the six beautiful winners."

The Holiday issue of Vervegirl Magazine featuring all six winners will be in schools on December 3rd, 2007.
