Commemorative Book Launch to Honour 100th Anniversary of Law Society of Alberta

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Oct. 17, 2007) - The Law Society of Alberta will launch Just Works: Lawyers in Alberta 1907-2007, a special commemorative book in honour of 100 years of service in Alberta. The book launch will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Lougheed House in Calgary. This event is open to the public.

"Just Works is a collection of essays illustrating the vibrant history of the law and lawyers in Alberta, which is being published in honour of the 100th Anniversary of the Law Society of Alberta," says Jim Peacock, president of the Law Society of Alberta.

The commemorative book is the result of a partnership between the Law Society of Alberta and Legal Archives Society of Alberta. Archival photos complement the various stories written by different authors from around the province.

The book launch is one of a number of celebratory opportunities held this year.

Pro Bono Law Alberta, the Law Society of Alberta's centennial legacy was launched in May, 2007. Pro Bono Law Alberta is aimed at increasing and enabling pro bono opportunities for lawyers and legal services for Albertans in need.

Other 100th Anniversary celebration events included the unveiling of a commemorative stamp issued by Canada Post on September 13, 2007. Centennial celebration gala dinners were held simultaneously in Calgary and Edmonton on October 4, 2007, featuring keynote speakers, The Rt. Honourable Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin and the Honourable E. Peter Lougheed.

The final commemorative event will be a conference on the future of the legal profession on October 26-27at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. Keynote speakers will include Harry Arthurs, former president, York University and The Honourable A. Anne McLellan, P.C.
