Compassion International Achieves Major Milestone With One Millionth Sponsorship

LONDON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 26, 2009) - On May 20, 2009, Compassion International reached a major milestone in its 57 year history, as Fellow Blewussi Kpodo, an 8-year-old boy from the African nation of Togo, became the one-millionth child currently sponsored through the ministry. Fellow's sponsorship sees Compassion's ministry come full circle - his sponsor is Olympic gold medalist, Jang Mi-Ran, a citizen of South Korea, the nation where Compassion's ministry was born. This historic milestone comes on the heels of the recent celebration of surpassing two million children sponsored since Compassion's ministry began.

Rev. Everett Swanson launched Compassion's ministry in 1952 in the aftermath of the Korean War. Over the past 57 years, Compassion has grown into an international alliance of nations, with sponsors in eleven funding countries sponsoring children in 25 of the poorest nations of the earth. In 2008, Togo joined the Compassion family as the 25th field country.

Compassion's staff and leadership are grateful to all of its sponsors, for their love of children and faithfulness to God's call on their lives.

Compassion has seen explosive growth internationally, with several partner countries, including Compassion Canada, doubling and tripling in size since 2003. Its Christ-centred, child-focused and church-based approach to child development makes Compassion the sponsorship agency of choice for Christians around the world.

Since 1952, Compassion International has facilitated one-on-one child-development through partnership with local churches around the world. Compassion serves over 1,000,000 children in 25 of the world's poorest nations. To learn more about Compassion, visit
