Compellent Breaks Boundaries of Unified Storage With Intelligent zNAS Solution

Next-Generation File Storage Offers Fluid Integration Between SAN and NAS to Simplify, Consolidate Data Management

EDEN PRAIRIE, MN--(Marketwire - April 27, 2010) - Compellent today expands its unified storage offerings with the Compellent® zNAS™ (network-attached storage) solution, which consolidates file- and block-level storage on a single, intelligent platform based on the ZFS file system. With its Fluid Data™ architecture, Compellent zNAS can actively manage and move data in a virtual pool of storage, regardless of the size and type of block, file or drive. As a result, enterprises can simplify management, improve performance for critical applications and reduce complexity and costs.

According to the "Unstructured Data in 2010: Trends to Watch"  report issued by Enterprise Strategy Group, the rise in unstructured data, such as office documents, digital images and video, will account for the bulk of growth within the data center, driving IT to consider unified platforms to alleviate the strain. Compellent customers can now benefit from consolidating multiple file servers along with block data onto a single Compellent zNAS system, reducing hardware, administrative overhead and associated IT staff costs in the process.

Fluid Data Architecture Enables Superior Utilization and Efficiency

  • Compellent unified storage with zNAS offers a single interface to streamline management of heterogeneous Unix, Linux and Windows file and block data.
  • Fluid Data architecture increases storage efficiency and utilization by automatically tiering file storage at the block-level, intelligently thin provisioning storage for unstructured data and delivering rapid data recovery and thin replication.
  • Integrating SAN and NAS management simplifies planning, provisioning and recovery of virtual servers in VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, and Oracle environments.
  • High performance, highly scalable hardware includes dual Intel Xeon Quad-core (Nehalem) processors, memory up to 48GB and connectivity options including 8Gb Fibre Channel.

Quotes

  • Bruce Kornfeld, vice president of marketing, Compellent: "With unstructured data growth projected at more than 60 percent annually over the next few years, we built an intelligent, unified platform that can eliminate the guesswork of storage planning and management. zNAS users can easily scale capacity without downtime, and leverage the Fluid Data management features, including automated tiered storage and thin provisioning, that have become synonymous with Compellent. This is powerful technology that can boost efficiency and also reduce costs across the board."
  • Terri McClure, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group: "Our research indicates that 2010 is the year of IT cost containment, and users are looking for ways to reduce operating expenditures by reducing storage infrastructure complexity. With solutions like zNAS unified storage and Compellent's next-generation approach to block and file management, users can do just that. They can plan and manage data in a flexible pool, increasing capacity utilization and reducing the number of systems deployed to drive down operational costs."

Getting to the Core of zNAS at C-Drive 2010
Compellent will demonstrate the scalability, manageability and efficiency of the zNAS solution at the company's annual channel partner and end-user conference, C-Drive 2010, May 2-6, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minn. Compellent plans to ship zNAS to all markets by the end of June 2010, exclusively through the company's international network of channel partners.

Excluding maintenance and services, Compellent unified storage with zNAS starts at about $84,000 with two clustered zNAS nodes, two clustered SAN controllers, 8.7 TB of SAS storage capacity, and thin provisioning, automated tiered storage, snapshots, replication and storage resource management licenses.

Adding two clustered zNAS nodes to an existing Compellent SAN starts at $36,000, excluding maintenance and services.
