Convoy of 'enviroTrucks' to Converge on Capital Region on Monday: Trucking Industry Unveils New Smog-Free, GHG Busting Trucks

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 11, 2007) - Can you imagine a time when the exhaust from a heavy truck is cleaner than the air we breathe in most Canadian cities; or where tractor-trailers are so fuel efficient that greenhouse gases can be reduced by the equivalent of removing as many as 64,000 trucks or 2.6 million cars from the road?

CTA Unveiling the enviroTruck -- That day is closer than you think according to the Canadian Trucking Alliance which is leading a convoy of what CTA calls 'enviroTrucks' that will converge on the capital region on Monday, October 15th. According to a study recently conducted for CTA by a well-respected US consulting engineering/research firm, increased investment in enviroTrucks could have the potential GHG equivalent impact of taking up to 64,000 trucks and 2.6 million cars from the road.

Media Event -- An event is being held for the media that morning to kick-off CTA's campaign to increase awareness amongst the public and to convince the federal government to join with trucking companies and truck and trailer manufacturers to encourage industry investment in new smog-free, GHG busting tractor trailers. The event will take place in Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau with Parliament Hill as backdrop. The media event will include:

- enviroTruck Display - A convoy of specially marked enviroTrucks will be on display.

- Presentation -- A short bilingual presentation will be made by David Bradley, CEO, Canadian Trucking Alliance and Marc Cadieux, president of the Quebec Trucking Association to explain the CTA enviroTruck initiative.

- Statement by Brian Jean, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities - Mr. Jean will provide comment on CTA's environmental efforts.

- Statement by USEPA -- Sheila Batka, Environmental Scientist, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will also speak about her agency's interest in the enviroTruck initiative and the role Canadian trucking associations and carriers have been playing to improve the industry's environmental performance on a North American wide basis.

- Statement by NRCAN - Bob Smith, Chief, ecoENERGY for Fleets, Transportation Energy Use Division, Office of Energy Efficiency, Natural Resources Canada, will speak about how CTA's enviroTruck initiative fits within the framework of a CTA-NRCAN memorandum of understanding to seek ways to reduce GHG and air contaminants

- White Handkerchief Test - A white cloth is passed over the exhaust of the new smog-free truck engines to demonstrate just how clean the new engines are.

- Media Ride-along - Reporters will be able to go for a ride-along in one of the enviroTrucks on display at the media event. (Must be arranged in advance by contacting CTA's Director of Communications, Rebecka Torn see details below).
