Correctional Service of Canada Presents the 2009 "Volunteer of the Year" Award to Mrs. Susan Hall

SPRINGBROOK, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 26, 2010) - The 2009 Taylor Award was presented to Mrs. Susan Hall during a ceremony in Springbrook, Alberta on April 23, 2010. The Taylor Award is presented annually to an outstanding volunteer with the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) who has shown admirable dedication in the service of volunteerism to corrections.

"I would like to congratulate Mrs. Hall on her achievements as a longstanding volunteer with the Correctional Service of Canada. Her positive contributions have distinguished her as a volunteer with an exceptional commitment to public safety – one that is certainly deserving of this special recognition," said Earl Dreeshen, Member of Parliament for Red Deer on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety.

"Over the past 18 years, you have been a role model not only for offenders but for CSC staff and other volunteers. You have been described as someone showing great compassion and empathy and these are certainly key elements in the healing process of numerous offenders," said CSC Commissioner Don Head.

Mrs. Hall has been a volunteer instructor for the Christopher Leadership Course in Effective Speaking at Bowden Institution. She has instructed each of the program's 29 courses over an 18-year period. Many offenders graduate from the program with skills that have a tremendous impact on their lives; enhanced employability skills, increased motivation to participate in other programs, and a desire for more meaningful interaction with their families.

In 2001, CSC, in conjunction with the National Volunteer Association, created and presented the Taylor Award to Dr. Charles and Mrs. Charlotte Taylor to mark their lifetime commitment to offenders. The annual selection process is based on criteria highlighting the values set out by Dr. Charles and Mrs. Charlotte Taylor.
