Correctional Service of Canada: Edmonton Institution Inmate Death

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 19, 2008) - Edmonton Institution inmate Matthew Veness, age 25, died this morning at an Edmonton hospital.

He was found in his cell at Edmonton Institution on the morning of November 17. He was unresponsive and had signs of a self-inflicted injury. Institutional staff called an ambulance and he was moved to an outside hospital but died on November 19.

Next of kin have been notified.

Matthew Veness was serving an indeterminate sentence for First Degree Murder. His sentence commenced on April 27, 2007.

As is the case with other deaths in custody, police and the coroner have been notified. The death may be the subject of a coroner's inquest. The Correctional Service of Canada investigation will also review the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Edmonton Institution is a federal penitentiary currently accommodating 242 maximum security inmates.
