Correctional Service of Canada: Inmate Assault at Saskatchewan Penitentiary

SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY, PRINCE ALBERT, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Dec. 21, 2007) - At approximately 22:25 hours on Thursday December 20, 2007 a male inmate was discovered with several stab wounds to his arm, lower back and leg. Staff administered medical attention at the scene and the subject was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since returned to the institution. The incident occurred on one of the medium security cellblocks of the institution, where the inmate was housed. The unit is currently locked down and a search is underway to locate the weapon used in the assault.

The RCMP and institutional officials are investigating the incident.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal institution for medium security inmates. It also contains a separate maximum-security unit. There are currently 608 inmates in total at the facility.
