Correctional Service of Canada: Lockdown at Drumheller Institution

DRUMHELLER, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 13, 2010) - Drumheller Institution has been locked down to facilitate a search of the institution. 

The lockdown and search are being conducted as part of a planned search for contraband drugs, weapons, and cell phones to ensure the continued safety of the public, staff and inmates. Thirteen K-9 teams from CSC, Canada Border Service Agency, Calgary Police Service and the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security are assisting with the search.

As part of its Transformation Agenda, CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates.

The institution will remain on lockdown status to facilitate completion of this search and will return to normal routine on Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km southeast of Calgary, with a total of 537 medium security and 72 minimum security inmates.
