Correctional Service of Canada: Lockdown at Stony Mountain Institution

STONY MOUNTAIN, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Nov. 24, 2009) - On Monday, November 23, 2009, at approximately 9 p.m., correctional officers at Stony Mountain Institution found that an inmate had been assaulted. The injured inmate was transported to an outside hospital for treatment where his injuries were determined to be non-life threatening.

The RCMP was notified and CSC will conduct an investigation into the incident.

The Institution has subsequently been placed on lockdown to facilitate a search of the facility. The lockdown will remain in effect until institutional management determine it is safe to return to a normal routine. Regularly scheduled visits have been cancelled.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
